Advising Your “Best Friend”

Sometimes we’re faced with a difficult decision in life where we must decide between two ore more choices. Perhaps you have an offer on the table that would change your career trajectory and potentially lead to more happiness, and are in a stable job with stable income and good benefits. What should you do?

In Daniel Pink’s recent Pinkcast 4.21, he makes a great suggestion. It takes removing yourself from your current situation first, whether that be through a few deep breaths or some mindful meditation. Once somewhat removed, picture your best friend in the situation instead.

Your best friend calls you in a frenzy and asks, “What should I do?” With all the information, what would you tell your best friend to do? This may not work like you want it to every time, but it will at least provide some insight into the decision you ultimately have to make.
